School Food Waste
Composting and Reusables Program

Our school food waste composting program is in its fifth year and going strong. In addition to running our full compost program at five schools, we have also added a reusables pilot program, in partnership with EcoLab Hawaii, at our flagship school, Lahaina Intermediate. The 2022/23 school year we successfully diverted over 93,000 lbs of food from the landfill, bringing our program total to over 120,000 lbs of food waste diverted and composted!

We are looking to grow this program exponentially to divert as much waste as possible from our central Maui landfill, and teach our keiki to view food scraps as a resource.

West Maui Green Cycle will set up collection station(s) on campus, and can compost on site or off, whatever will work best for your school’s needs. If you or your school is interested, please contact us to discuss program implementation for the 2024 school year. Even if you’re just curious, don’t hesitate to reach out, this program is much simpler than you think!
